A Painting in Progress

Painting a dog portrait has the same approach as painting a landscape, still life or any other genre of painting. I start out by massing in the largest shapes, evaluating them for color and value, and then proceed by breaking those shapes into smaller and smaller ones. The finishing details are important, but not as important as getting those initial elements correct. Here are some photos to show the process.....
